- The marks
- 5 marks: Format 1, Organisation of Ideas 1, Content 2, Accuracy 1. 120-150 words, one of two questions.
- Descriptive AND analytical
- The syllabus requires both. Listing what happened is description; explaining causes, effects and what it implies is the analysis that earns the content marks.
- Article format
- A title, then a by-line naming the writer. Those two lines are what the format mark is looking for.
- Article structure
- Introduction that raises the issue → development of the argument → a conclusion that sums up or suggests. New matter must never appear in the conclusion.
- A good title
- Names the subject and hints at the angle — 'Screens and Sleep: The Hidden Cost of Late-Night Scrolling', not 'My Views'.
- Report format
- A headline, a by-line naming the reporter, and the place and date of reporting. The dateline is the feature an article does not have.
- Report tense and voice
- Past tense, because the event has happened; often the passive, which keeps attention on the event: 'The exhibition was inaugurated by the Principal.'
- Report: facts first
- Open with what happened, where and when, so a reader who stops after one paragraph still has the news.
- Article vs report
- A report records events objectively and stays in the third person. An article is signed, may argue a view, and may use a measured first person.
- Using the inputs
- The verbal inputs supplied are the raw material. Expand and arrange them; neither ignore them nor copy them out.
- What analysis looks like
- 'Sixty students attended' is description. 'The turnout suggests students want more career guidance than the school currently offers' is analysis — an inference drawn from the fact.
- Register
- Formal but readable for a general reader. No slang, no contractions, and exclamation marks used sparingly, since they read as excitement rather than fact.
