JEE Main (Joint Entrance Examination – Main)
JEE Main is India's national engineering entrance exam, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA). It decides admission to the NITs, IIITs and other centrally funded technical institutes. You must also clear it to sit JEE Advanced, the exam for the IITs. It is held twice a year, in January and April, and your best score of the two counts.

Every question, MCQ or numerical, gets +4 for a correct answer and −1 for a wrong one. A question left blank gets 0. Here is the change many students miss: since 2025, all five Section B numerical questions are compulsory (you no longer get 10 to choose from), and a wrong answer there also costs −1. So knowing when to skip a numerical is now a real scoring skill. A wrong guess on a numerical costs you, just as it does on an MCQ.
JEE Main syllabus & free chapter-wise practice
The JEE Main syllabus is the NCERT Class 11 and 12 syllabus for Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Nothing outside it is asked. The most useful habit: finish a chapter in NCERT, then practise it straight away with MCQs that go from easy to hard. Below, each subject links to free chapter-wise practice. The levels are set a little above the real paper (Easy ≈ a typical Main question, Hard ≈ JEE Advanced level).
Physics
Half the paper is solving problems against the clock. Mechanics, Electrodynamics and Modern Physics have the most questions. The numerical section rewards clean, fast working.
Chemistry
The closest of the three to NCERT, and the fastest to score in. Physical Chemistry is numerical. Inorganic is about remembering facts (read NCERT line by line). Organic is about reaction mechanisms.
Mathematics
The section that decides rank the most, and the one that takes the most time. Calculus, Algebra and Coordinate Geometry have the most questions. Speed comes only from practising again and again, from easy to hard.
How to prepare for JEE Main
JEE Main is won by solving problems fast and correctly, not by watching hours of lectures. Understanding a concept is step one. What the exam really tests is whether you can turn it into fast, correct answers against the clock. That only comes from timed practice.
- Finish a chapter in NCERT, then practise its MCQs the same day. Start easy and work up to Advanced level.
- Always practise with negative marking and a timer on. Learn to skip a question when you are only guessing.
- Keep a mistake list, one line per mistake. Write down why it happened: a concept gap, a silly slip, or time pressure. Read it again the same day.
- From a few months before the exam, take one full-length timed mock every week. Go through every wrong and skipped question.
- In the last few weeks, revise from your concept notes and past papers. Do not start new chapters.

JEE Main vs JEE Advanced
JEE Main has single-correct questions and a fixed pattern. It decides NIT/IIIT admission and who can sit JEE Advanced. JEE Advanced (for the IITs) is a separate, harder exam, and its pattern is hard to predict. It can have more than one correct option, passage-based sets, and negative-marking rules that change from year to year. Build accuracy at Main level first. JEE Main — frequently asked questions
What is the JEE Main 2027 exam pattern?+
JEE Main Paper 1 has 75 questions — 25 each in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics — for 300 marks. Each subject has 20 MCQs (Section A) and 5 numerical questions (Section B), all compulsory. Marking is +4 for correct, −1 for wrong, 0 for unattempted, over a 3-hour computer-based test.
How is JEE Main marked, and is there negative marking?+
Yes. Every correct answer is +4, every wrong answer is −1, and unattempted questions score 0. Since 2025 the negative marking applies to the numerical (Section B) questions too, because all five are now compulsory.
How many questions are there in JEE Main?+
75 questions in Paper 1 (B.E./B.Tech) — 25 in each of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, split into 20 MCQs and 5 numerical questions per subject, for a total of 300 marks.
Is NCERT enough for JEE Main?+
NCERT is the base you must have, especially for Chemistry, which follows it closely. But it is not enough on its own for Physics and Mathematics. Those need a lot of problem practice beyond NCERT. The right approach: NCERT first, then chapter-wise practice from easy up to JEE Advanced level.
What is the JEE Main syllabus?+
