- The section at a glance
- Reading Skills 26 marks: comprehension 10+8=18 on two passages of 600-750 words combined, plus note making 5 and summary 3 on a separate 200-250 word passage.
- The two passages
- The first may be factual, descriptive or literary. The second is case-based and factual, carrying verbal or visual inputs such as statistical data or charts.
- Question type
- Multiple Choice and Objective Type Questions, testing comprehension, interpretation, analysis, inference, evaluation and vocabulary.
- Skim, then scan
- Skim the whole passage first for the general sense, then read the questions, then scan back for the specific detail each one needs. Do not read word by word from the start.
- Answer from the passage only
- Marks are for what the text states or implies. Correct outside knowledge that contradicts the passage still loses the mark — 'according to the passage' means exactly that.
- Factual questions
- Answerable by locating a statement in the text. Find the sentence rather than trusting your memory of the passage.
- Inference questions
- Ask what the passage implies without stating. The answer must be supported by the text — a reasonable guess that the passage does not support is wrong.
- Vocabulary in context
- Choose the meaning the word carries in that passage, not every dictionary sense. A policy 'quietly shelved' is abandoned, not placed on a bookshelf.
- Tone questions
- Tone is the writer's attitude — approving, critical, ironic, detached — conveyed through word choice. Look at the adjectives and verbs the writer selects.
- Title questions
- A title must be short and must cover the passage as a whole. A phrase from one paragraph is too narrow.
- Reading charts
- Case-based questions expect the data to be read alongside the prose. Percentage points are not percentages: a rise from 52% to 74% is 22 percentage points.
- Apparent contradictions
- When a table and the text seem to disagree, they almost always measure different years, units or categories. Read both again before choosing.
