Note making carries 5 marks and the summary 3, on a passage of about 200-250 words. The marks are awarded for four separate things, so an answer can be full of good content and still lose half of them on structure.
- The mark split
- Note Making 5 — Title 1, Numbering and indenting 1, Key/glossary 1, Notes 2. Summary 3 — Content 2, Expression 1.
- The title
- Short, central to the passage, placed at the top. It is worth one mark on its own, and omitting it costs that mark outright.
- Numbering and indenting
- Any consistent hierarchy will do — 1, 1.1, 1.2 or I, A, i — as long as sub-points are indented under the main points they belong to.
- How many headings
- A 200-250 word passage usually yields three or four main points, each with sub-points. Ten headings means no analysis has been done.
- The key or glossary
- Every abbreviation you invent must be listed with its meaning. Widely known forms such as e.g. or % need no entry; anything you coined does.
- Useful symbols
- → for leads to or results in, ∴ for therefore, & for and, ≠ for is not. Symbols save space and count as abbreviation.
- Note style
- Phrases, not sentences. Drop articles, auxiliaries and repetition: 'Trees absorb harmful pollutants' rather than 'Trees are known to absorb harmful pollutants from the air'.
- What to leave out
- Examples, repeated ideas and the writer's illustrations. Notes record the structure of the argument, not its decoration.
- Never copy verbatim
- Copying whole sentences demonstrates neither selection nor compression, which are the two skills being assessed.
- No opinions
- Notes record what the passage says. Evaluation and personal reaction belong nowhere in either the notes or the summary.
- Writing the summary
- Base it on the notes you have just made, in connected prose, in your own words, up to 50 words — roughly a fifth of the source.
- Summary discipline
- Preserve the logical order and relative emphasis of the original. Add nothing that is not in the passage, and use no abbreviations.
