- Mrs Annie Pearson is 'a pleasant but worried-looking woman in her forties' with a light, flurried voice. Mrs Fitzgerald is 'older, heavier and a strong and sinister personality' with a deep, rather Irish voice.

- The stage directions insist the two must sound sharply different, because after the swap the audience must be able to tell which personality is speaking from which body.
- The advice
- 'Put your foot down, once an' for all, an' be the mistress of your own house an' the boss of your own family.' Mrs Pearson agrees in principle and cannot do it.
- Why an outsider cannot help
- 'It couldn't possibly be somebody else — they'd resent it at once and wouldn't listen.' This is precisely why the personality swap is needed.

- Mrs Fitzgerald's proposal: she will confront the family, but wearing Mrs Pearson's appearance. Mrs Fitzgerald learnt her arts out East, over twelve years.
- Doris
- A pretty, spoilt girl in her early twenties. She demands her yellow silk be ironed for an evening out with Charlie Spence and is told her mother 'wouldn't be seen dead' with him — 'Buck teeth and half-witted'.
- Why Doris cries
- 'It wasn't what she said but the way she said it — an' the way she looked.' The manner, not the words, is what breaks through.
- Cyril
- 'The masculine counterpart of Doris.' Told there is no tea and no mending done, he protests — and is told the family all avoid what they dislike, so she has 'joined the movement'.
- The stout
- Mrs Pearson calmly asks for stout in the afternoon. Asked what for, she replies, 'To drink — you clot!' The children conclude she may have concussion.
- George
- About fifty, 'fundamentally decent but solemn, self-important, pompous'. He is amazed at the stout and says he does not like surprises.
- Pompy-ompy Pearson
- The revelation that undoes him: at the club 'they call you Pompy-ompy Pearson because they think you're so slow and pompous'. He is 'one of their standing jokes. Famous.'
- Changing back
- Mrs Fitzgerald cannot bear the family's misery and insists on reversing the swap, though her counterpart argues that 'a bit more of the same would do 'em good'.
